A Large-Scale Sprinklered Fire Test Series of Lithium-ion Batteries in an ASRS Racking Configuration

This presentation delves into the fire hazards linked to lithium-ion batteries, offering an overview. It reviews the historical landscape of large-scale sprinklered fire testing involving these batteries and highlights a recent series conducted at UL Solutions. The presentation provides intricate details on tested rack storage configurations and the applied sprinkler protection scheme, specifically designed to counteract cell-to-cell thermal runaway propagation within the test setup.


Mr. Friday, a licensed fire protection engineer, boasts a diverse background in commercial and industrial building design, fire protection equipment manufacturing, fire investigation, and firefighting. Graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Tennessee in 1996 and an M.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2000, he has held various roles in the field since 1991. With a foundation as a firefighter and wildland firefighter in the 1990s, he transitioned to a two-decade-long career as a fire protection engineering consultant, contributing to projects across North America. Currently part of The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc. in the Technical Services department, Mr. Friday is a licensed fire protection engineer in numerous states and has been an active member of NFPA and SFPE for over 20 years, earning the designation of 'Fellow' from SFPE in 2018.
