Lead Fire Investigator

As a Lead Fire Investigator, based at our Mississauga location, you will report to the Director of Forensic Services. The successful candidate will be highly proficient in performing forensic fire investigations for structures, vehicles, and equipment. You will conduct investigations in numerous forms; residential, retail, institutional, office, industrial and commercial spaces.
The core responsibilities of our fire investigator include, but are not limited to:
- site evaluation
- origin and cause fire investigations, vehicle and equipment fires, explosions
- collection and preservation of evidence adhering to chain of custody procedures
- keeping the client informed at all stages of the investigation
- liaising with fire department, police department, public safety officials, and others
- conducting interviews of various stakeholders, witnesses, officials, and other third parties
- preparing concise unbiased reports of findings and recommendations
- discretion while working with potentially sensitive and confidential information
- the identification of general safety of the site and fire damaged areas
- recognizing potential subrogation opportunities
- the ability to work at heights, climb ladders, work in different environmental conditions
The following achievements are expected of the applicant:
- minimum of 5 years experience as Lead Investigator
- Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) designation or equivalent (IAAI or CAFI)
- practical knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems
- working knowledge of the requirements of Part 3 of the Ontario Building Code (OBC)
- working knowledge of the current Occupational Health & Safety Act
- familiarity with National Fire Code of Canada, and NFPA 96
- experience in project management, management of field staff and contractors
- excellent problem-solving skills
- strong written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to brief stakeholders on complex issues in a succinct manner
- familiarity with Microsoft Office software applications
- ability to work under stressful conditions
- relate well to clients and co-workers
Additional qualifications would be strong assets:
- Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator (CVFI) designation
- high-level technical knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical systems
- post-secondary education in a field related to forensic investigation
- current licence to practice Professional Engineering in Ontario
- experience with insurance-related work
- fluency in French
