Overview of Select Changes to the Ontario Fire Code

This online seminar will provide an overview of select Ontario Fire Code changes for requirements harmonized with the National Fire Code of Canada and for requirements unique to Ontario.

The presentation will cover changes to the Ontario Fire Code in effect on January 1, 2026, with a few exceptions. It will also include changes introduced by Ontario Regulation 87/25, including:

Harmonization with the 2020 National Fire Code on various requirements including flammable and combustible liquids, dangerous goods, aerosol products, and combustible dusts requirements;
Alignment with recent changes to the Ontario Building Code, including new requirements for carbon monoxide alarms in existing residential occupancies and care occupancies, maintenance of mass timber encapsulation materials, testing for integrated fire protection and life safety systems, and certain farm buildings;
Strengthened fire safety for existing boarding, lodging, and rooming houses and for two-unit residential occupancies through new smoke alarm requirements and requirements for reduced flame-spread ratings of certain interior wall and ceiling finishes; and
Updated references for more current editions of standards, legislation, and other documents.

Sunaina Menezes is a Fire Protection Engineer with the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) in Ontario, operating within the Technical Services Section.

She has built a distinguished career in the Ontario Public Service, where she has served in numerous roles over many years. Throughout her tenure, Sunaina has provided extensive technical and legislative expertise and undertaken compliance and enforcement activities.
