Beyond the Fire Alarm: A Guide to Fire Safety Compliance

This in-person and virtual presentation provides an overview of current fire protection compliance requirements, testing standards, and enforcement trends affecting building owners, property managers, and facility operators. Attendees will gain practical insights into recent Fire Code enforcement priorities, common deficiencies identified during inspections and frequently overlooked mandatory testing obligations.

Key topics include CAN/ULC-S1001 Integrated Systems Testing (IST), Part 7 Smoke Control testing requirements, and critical inspection programs such as 5-Year Fire Department Connection (FDC) Hydrostatic Testing, 3-Year Fire Sprinkler Trip Testing, and 15-Year Sprinkler Testing and Flushing in accordance with NFPA 25. The presentation will also cover ULC monitoring and security solutions, including fire alarm monitoring, access control, and video surveillance systems.

Participants will learn the differences between various fire protection devices, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, smoke alarms, and combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarms, along with their intended applications. Additional discussion will focus on understanding the distinction between placing a system on test and fire alarm panel bypass procedures, including Fire Watch considerations, as well as identifying and responding to common fire alarm trouble conditions.

Designed to enhance awareness and support regulatory compliance, this session will help attendees better understand their responsibilities for maintaining life safety systems and ensuring reliable building protection.

Raymond Dulac

Raymond is President of the Canadian Fire Alarm Association’s Central Ontario Chapter and a seasoned fire alarm professional with over 25 years of field and leadership experience. As Head Of Training, Educational Development & Technical Support at Lifeline Fire Protection, he oversees, mentors, trains, and provides technical support to more than 60 fire alarm technicians. Throughout his career, Raymond has managed and supervised fire alarm operations for leading companies, specializing in installation, inspection, verification, troubleshooting, and compliance.

Russell Wilson

Gladys is a sales and marketing professional with over 20 years of experience across the telecommunications, FMCG, electronics, and fire protection industries. In her role with Lifeline Group of Companies, she supports sales and marketing initiatives while working closely with property managers, condominium corporations, and commercial clients to deliver fire and life safety solutions.
