Session 8

Beyond Standard Codes: Alternative Design Solutions for Warehouses and Industrial Buildings

Warehousing and industrial applications have evolved significantly with the introduction of multi-level platforms, automated process lines, and high-density storage solutions. However, egress and exiting requirements in the Ontario Building Code (OBC) remain largely fixed, focusing on either 45-meter travel distances or 60-meter perimeter exit arrangements. This presentation will explore alternative approaches to egress that have been evaluated and implemented, including time-based egress analysis, fire modeling, and people movement studies. We will also discuss strategies for equipment-intense, low-occupancy areas such as automated picking systems, as well as egress solutions for platforms and mezzanines, including the use of ladders and alternative stair configurations.
