High-storage densities, limited access, electronic conveyancing systems, high racking, overpacking and overstacking can all elevate fire risk, making fire safety design more challenging.

A total of 55 fires in Toronto last year (2023) that resulted from the failure of lithium-ion batteries. In New York City, they continue to see the same rise in incidents with evidence continuing the first several weeks of 2024.

Replacing Sprinklers After a Fire
After a fire, all sprinklers affected by the incident shall be replaced according to the current, 2023 edition of NFPA 25, the Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems. Note this includes more than just those sprinklers that activated.

Structural hazards of smouldering fires in timber buildings
Smouldering, a slow, persistent, and flameless form of combustion has only been observed in few fire experiments of mass timber compartments. Smouldering is a phenomenon well-understood in the wildfire community, but is not yet recognised as a hazard in the fire safety design and fire-fighting of modern timber buildings.
